Discussion:
geotagging alters image file?

Greetings,

I am running kpa version 4.4 fedora 20 64bit.
I was just experimenting with the correlator to geotag photos from a
recent vacation, and I noticed that the exif headers of the geotagged
images now include the coordinates. Isn't it possible to save the
results of geotagging either in index.xml or a version of exif.db? I
have always liked that kphotoalbum does not touch the original image files.

Is there an option I am missing? I was unable to find anything relevant
by searching the internet.

Thanks

George

Why would you not want to store the coordinates inside the files? There's a
dedicated EXIF header for that! Either that photo has been taken there or not
;-)

Anyways, the tagging itself is AFAIK not done by KPA itself, but by the
geolocation kipi-plugin.

One reason would be that you can store the images in a read-only location.
Another usecase would be that the integrity of the image files is kept intact
when you need to prove that the images have not been tampered with.
Or simply that your backup program doesn't back up the image files a second time... ;-)

True. So I guess it's best to ask there...

That's a good argument, but what do you do with EXIF rotation? It also has to
be stored in the headers and also alters the file.

EXIF rotation is stored by the camera and we just read it. When an image is
rotated in KPA, that information is stored on KPA DB, not to the EXIF.

Design principle of KPA was not to alter images, and I really like that principle. A loss of images is less likely to happen that way.

The kipi plugins are independent of KPA and they do alter images. I do not think that we can really affect how they work.

I just made the same point to Tobias (in PM, because I did not notice
the list response).

OK I will look a little in their mailing list to see if it makes sense
to ask about this.

Thank you for KPA
